NSCDC trains Cross River officers on criminal justice, warns against rights abuse

The Cross River State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has trained personnel of the Cross River State Command on criminal justice administration and human rights compliance.

The two-day intensive training carried out by the Director of Legal Services of the Corps, Aminu Kayode Alilu, at the Command Headquarters in Calabar, was aimed at strengthening professional conduct, improving criminal investigations and aligning operations with the rule of law.

The workshop brought together Area Commanders, Divisional Officers, intelligence and investigation operatives, legal officers, station officers, cell guards, Anti-Corruption and Critical National Asset and Infrastructure (CNAI) personnel and tactical commanders.

Alilu drilled participants on the Administration of Criminal Justice Act ACJA, 2015, and other legal frameworks governing law enforcement, covering effective investigations, lawful arrests, proper handling of suspects and successful prosecution.

He warned that disregard for due process during arrests, interrogations and detention could undermine prosecutions, expose the Corps to litigation and violate citizens’ fundamental rights.

“Effective security operations must be conducted within the confines of the law. Professionalism, accountability and respect for human dignity are non-negotiable,” Alilu stressed.

In his remarks, Cross River State Commandant, Okarazu Chima, thanked the Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, for prioritizing legal capacity development and for the choice of Alilu as facilitator for the training.

Okarazu described the training as timely and indispensable to the Command’s operational effectiveness, urging officers to translate knowledge into improved performance.
