Ogun govt consoles deceased student’s family, pledges action against corporal punishment

The Ogun State Government has sent a second delegation to console the family of Monday Arijo, a student who passed away on Friday after reportedly receiving corporal punishment from a teacher at Obada Grammar School, Idi-emi.

Meanwhile, the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abeokuta is conducting a post-mortem to establish the cause of death.

The delegation, led by Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Prof Abayomi Arigbabu, conveyed the government’s condolences and was the second team sent to support the bereaved family.

Arigbabu warned teachers in state-owned primary and secondary schools to refrain from using corporal punishment on students.

“The state government has set up a committee to investigate the root cause and all circumstances surrounding this incident,” he said, adding, “The goal is not just to address the issues at Obada Grammar School but to establish measures across all schools in the state.”

Arigbabu also reassured that teachers found administering corporal punishment would face appropriate disciplinary actions.
