The Secretary to the Ogun State Government (SSG), Talabi Olatokunbo, has denied any involvement in the arrest of Babatunde Aremu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Youth Leader for Ijebu Ode Local Government and a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

Aremu was reportedly arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) on Sunday in Ijebu Ode.

According to sources, his arrest was linked to alleged plans to stage a protest over the ongoing crisis within the NURTW in the state.

A video circulating on Monday shows two unmarked white Hilux vehicles, carrying individuals believed to be security personnel, firing shots—seemingly to disperse bystanders during the operation to arrest Aremu. The arrest was rumoured to have been ordered by Talabi, sparking a public outcry.

In response, Talabi released a statement on Monday denying any role in the incident and distancing himself from the accusations. He called for transparency in the investigation by the relevant security agencies.

“I am aware of the disturbing video circulating online regarding the arrest of Comrade Babatunde Aremu, Ogun State Youth Leader of the All Progressives Congress. I categorically deny any involvement in or ordering of this arrest,” the statement read.

Talabi urged the public to avoid spreading unverified allegations and allow due process to uncover the truth. “I urge the security operatives concerned to ensure transparency in their investigation and provide clear explanations for the circumstances surrounding Mr Aremu’s arrest,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Youth Leaders’ Forum has condemned what it described as the “Gestapo-style arrest” of Aremu.

In a joint statement signed by Sabur Adefolu, Assistant State Youth Leader, and Timothy Odedina, Public Relations Officer, the group expressed outrage over the manner of the arrest.

“The arrest undermines human rights and the rule of law,” the Forum’s statement declared.

The youth leaders demanded clarity on the circumstances of Aremu’s detention and called for his immediate and unconditional release within 24 hours. They urged the DSS to either press charges or release him in accordance with legal procedures.

“This incident highlights the systemic oppression faced by Ogun State youths,” the statement added. “We stand firmly behind Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, a champion of youth empowerment and development, who has fostered peace and stability in our state.”
