The Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) has commenced a statewide Special Clearance Operation aimed at evacuating accumulated waste across Ogun State.
The newly appointed Special Adviser to the Governor and Managing Director of OGWAMA, Farouk Akintunde, said the operation became necessary to clear waste backlogs that were not adequately addressed before he assumed office.
According to Akintunde, all operational machinery of the authority has been fully deployed to various parts of the state, with the exercise taking place simultaneously in major towns including Abeokuta, Sango-Ota, Ijebu-Ode, and Ifo, among others.
He added that the “Night Operation,” which had been suspended several months ago, has also resumed in full force as part of efforts to fast-track waste evacuation.
“Following a fruitful meeting with the executive and members of the Ogun State Association of Waste Managers (AWAN), during which lingering issues that previously hampered their operations were resolved, members of the association have since returned to their assigned coverage areas,” Akintunde said.
He noted that the renewed collaboration is expected to significantly enhance the proper evacuation of accumulated waste across the state.
The OGWAMA boss urged residents to cooperate with the authority by handing over their waste to designated waste managers in their areas and ensuring proper containerisation of refuse in front of their homes, rather than dumping waste indiscriminately on roadsides and medians.
He warned that residents found engaging in indiscriminate dumping of refuse would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
