A violent clash between herdsmen and youths in Lano village, Yamaltu Deba Local Government Area (LGA) of Gombe State, has resulted in the death of one person and left two others injured.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, was confirmed by ASP Buhari Abdullahi, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Gombe State, in a statement released to the press.
According to Abdullahi, the altercation began when youths from Lano village reportedly barricaded the Lano-Deba Road and attacked herdsmen travelling from Kuri village, killing five of their cows.
The youths accused the herdsmen of stealing phones from local farmers and obstructing the transportation of farm produce.
“We received information that a group of youths from Lano village barricaded the Lano-Deba road and attacked Fulani herdsmen, killing five of their cows,” Abdullahi said.
In response, the Divisional Police Officer of the area led a team to the scene in an effort to contain the situation. However, despite their intervention, some of the youths pursued the herdsmen into the bush, leading to a violent confrontation.
“Three persons were shot with bows and arrows during the clash. The victims were rushed to the General Hospital in Deba for treatment but were later referred to the Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe,” Abdullahi explained.
One of the victims succumbed to stomach injuries while receiving treatment, while the other two remain hospitalised.
The police spokesperson assured the public that security personnel and vigilante groups have been deployed to the area to maintain peace and protect villagers, herdsmen, and road users.
“The situation is under control, and we urge all parties to maintain peace and refrain from further violence,” Abdullahi added.
