The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old suspect in connection with the gruesome murder of a six-year-old girl in Ibadan, recovering the victim’s severed head from his possession.
The incident occurred on Saturday at Adigun Village in the Olorunda Ogunsola area of the city and has sparked outrage among residents.
In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, said the Command received intelligence that a young girl had been killed and that her severed head was found in the possession of one Sodiq Kayode Akorede.
Following the report, the Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, ordered the immediate deployment of operatives to the scene to rescue the suspect and secure evidence.
Police operatives, who arrived swiftly, reportedly faced resistance from an angry mob but succeeded in rescuing and arresting the suspect with professionalism and restraint, while also recovering the severed head.
Preliminary investigation identified the victim as six-year-old Mutiyatu Sunday.
The police said the suspect allegedly killed the child and severed her head before being apprehended. He reportedly confessed to the crime during interrogation.
The suspect, who sustained injuries from mob action, has been taken to a medical facility for treatment and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation and prosecution.
The Command condemned attempts at jungle justice, warning that such actions undermine proper investigation and the administration of justice.
It assured residents that the case would be thoroughly investigated and justice would be served, urging the public to remain law-abiding and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
