Police contain suspected IED explosion at Bayelsa secretariat, arrest man

The Bayelsa State Police Command yesterday contained a suspected improvised explosive device explosion which occurred at about 6:00 a.m. within the State Secretariat Complex in Yenagoa.

The Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command, CP Iyamah Daniel Edebor, upon receiving the information, immediately led the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, Special Drone Unit and other tactical teams to the scene.

The command said that on arrival, operatives of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit swiftly secured the area, which was immediately cordoned off. A detailed search led to the discovery of one unexploded IED, which was identified and rendered safe by EOD operatives.

The police stated: “No life was lost, no property destroyed.”

However, the command disclosed that one Pentecost Elijah, a 60-year-old man from Otuan Community in Southern Ijaw Local Council of Bayelsa State, was arrested at the scene in connection with the incident.

According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Bayelsa State Command, DSP Musa Mohammed in Yenagoa, the suspect is currently undergoing interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department and will be charged upon the conclusion of investigations.

The command added that the situation is under control and normalcy has been restored.

The police appealed to members of the public to remain calm and continue with their lawful activities.
