Police debunk tribal clash claims after deadly Balogun Market fight

Operations at the popular Balogun Market on Lagos Island were disrupted yesterday after a clash between two traders turned violent, leaving one person dead.

The incident, which occurred around 11:00 a.m., threw the market into confusion, as many shop owners hurriedly shut their shops and fled for safety.

Reports of traders from different ethnic groups being targeted circulated, but eyewitnesses confirmed that only one person died in the fracas.
The Lagos State Police Command, in a statement, dismissed claims of tribal clashes. It explained that the violence stemmed from a free-for-all fight involving hoodlums and miscreants in the market.

According to police accounts, one Ebuka Adindu, from Abia State, stabbed fellow trader, Sodiq Ibrahim, from Kogi State, to death. Adindu was said to have stabbed himself in the shoulder shortly after and fell unconscious. He is currently receiving treatment under police custody in hospital.

Police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, clarified that no innocent life was lost, and no goods or property were destroyed. It added that investigation into the matter was ongoing, and Adindu would be prosecuted once discharged from hospital
