Operatives of the Cross River State Police Command have thwarted a kidnapping attempt in Calabar South, arresting three suspects and recovering firearms in the process.
According to a press statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ugbo Irene, the operation was carried out by the Divisional Police Officer and Surveillance Team from the Uwanse Division following a credible tip-off.
The suspects were intercepted while allegedly attempting to abduct one Mr. Nkereuwem Peter, 38, who resides at No. 35 Eneobong Avenue, Calabar South. Upon sighting the police team, the suspects reportedly opened fire, but were overpowered and subdued by the operatives.
Three suspects were arrested at the scene: Henry Efa Otu, 24, of Efut Effioene Street, Calabar; Lawrence Ita Inyang, 46, of No. 32 Efut Effioene, Calabar; and Umoh Ekpo, 46, also of No. 32 Efut Effioene Clan.
Two locally made pistols and one live cartridge were recovered from the suspects.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Rashid B. Afegbua, PSC, MNIPS, commended the officers for their swift response and reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to reducing crime to the barest minimum.
He further warned criminal elements in the state to desist from unlawful acts, adding that the Command is fully empowered to take decisive actions against crime.
The CP also called on members of the public to continue providing timely and useful information to the Police and other security agencies to ensure public safety.
Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to apprehend fleeing members of the gang and bring them to justice.
