Police nab 62-year-old for alleged extortion during burials in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 62-year-old man, Bernard Odinchefu, for allegedly extorting traders and families during burials and other events in Ihiala Local Council.

Police said the suspect, apprehended on October 1, 2025, is a member of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and was involved in terrorism-related activities, including acting as an informant for the group and leading an extortion network in the area.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement, said Odinchefu was arrested by operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu.

Preliminary investigations revealed that he was collecting more than N10,000 monthly from traders in Isseke and Orsumoghu communities and demanding over N100,000 from families organising burial ceremonies.

Ikenga added that the proceeds were allegedly sent to his commander in a terrorist camp. The suspect is currently in custody while investigations continue.

Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, assured residents of the command’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks linked to insurgent groups. He said the arrest was part of ongoing efforts to protect citizens from individuals exploiting them under the guise of agitation.

IPOB leadership has repeatedly distanced itself from such activities, describing those involved as criminals impersonating members of the movement and calling for them to be prosecuted.
