The Principal of Pacelli School for the Blind and Partially Sighted Children, Agnes Chinyere Onwudiwe, has called for renewed support from the government, individuals, and organisations to help the school overcome pressing challenges facing the school.
Onwudiwe made the call while delivering her speech at the school’s 57th graduation ceremony and creative art exhibition held in Surulere, Lagos.
She highlighted issues, such as flooding and shortages of essential educational resources, as major setbacks hindering the progress of the school and its students.
“Flooding, a persistent issue at Pacelli School, disrupts classes and access to essential facilities like the dining hall. This environmental challenge requires urgent infrastructure improvements,” she stated.
Onwudiwe explained that as a non-fee-paying institution, Pacelli School relies heavily on donations and the goodwill of the public.
“However, this support has not been sufficient to meet the growing needs of the students. The school faces shortages of critical and modern equipment, such as Braille embossers, computers, laptops, and writing frames, which are essential for learning,” she said.
She emphasised the need for investment in modern educational technology and inclusive education policies that will ensure no visually impaired child is left behind.
Addressing the graduating students, she congratulated them for overcoming various academic and personal challenges, describing their journey as remarkable.
She said: “It has been a journey that started with little steps; a journey that has taken you to remarkable heights.
“I encourage you never to give up when you face challenges. Hold on to God and He will help you.”
Onwudiwe, who also called on the public to join in actualising the school’s vision.
