Reps refers member to ethics committee over alleged assault on Bolt driver

House of rep member, Alex Ikwechegh

The House of Representatives has referred Alex Ikwechegh, member representing Aba South/Aba North Federal Constituency of Abia State, to its Ethics and Privileges Committee following allegations of assaulting a Bolt driver in Abuja’s Maitama area.

The decision came after a motion of privilege was moved by House Leader, Prof Julius Ihonvbere, during yesterday’s plenary.

Ihonvbere informed the House that a video circulating since Sunday allegedly shows Ikwechegh assaulting a Bolt driver and threatening to make him “disappear without consequences.” Ihonvbere argued that the member’s conduct brought disrepute to the House.

Despite a public apology and an expression of remorse from Ikwechegh, who stated, “I’m sorry,” on the House floor, the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, directed that the matter be referred to the Ethics and Privileges Committee for further investigation.

Kalu, who presided in the absence of Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, emphasised the importance of upholding House rules, especially when the dignity of the parliament is at stake.

“Our rules guide us. If the parliament’s dignity is questioned, we must investigate impartially,” Kalu stated.

He acknowledged Ikwechegh’s emotional appeal but insisted that “remorse alone is not enough. He will sit with the Ethics and Privileges Committee to ensure his case is heard.”

The committee’s review will determine any disciplinary measures or further actions in accordance with House procedures.
