The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, has admonished motorists to consistently exercise prudence, heightened safety consciousness and adherence to regulated speed limits on the roads, while exercising patience and remaining particularly vigilant.
His advice followed a collision that occurred along the Ojota inbound Ketu axis of Ikorodu Road, involving three vehicles on the main carriageway.
While lauding officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Giwa called for patience, especially in areas characterised by high pedestrian movement.
Preliminary investigations showed that a Toyota Sienna saloon car (KRD 311 JH) had slowed down to allow a large crowd of pedestrians to safely cross the expressway, with a mini truck positioned immediately behind it. Tragically, a Volkswagen commercial bus, driven at excessive speed, failed to slow down and forcefully rammed into the two stationary vehicles, precipitating a violent collision.
The impact resulted in the driver of the Volkswagen commercial bus being severely trapped within the mangled wreckage. LASTMA rescue operatives, who arrived at the scene, deployed extrication equipment and successfully freed the trapped driver, thereby averting a potentially fatal outcome.
Following the rescue, fellow commercial motorists at the scene promptly conveyed the critically injured and fractured driver to an undisclosed medical facility for intensive medical care.
Security reinforcement throughout the rescue operation was provided by officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Area ‘H’ Ogudu Police Division, who ensured effective crowd control, secured the accident scene and facilitated the seamless execution of the emergency response.
According to Giwa, unwavering compliance with traffic regulations and the cultivation of responsible driving habits remain critical pillars in the collective effort to curb road traffic accidents and safeguard human lives.
LASTMA also called on all road users to cooperate fully with traffic officials and comply strictly with extant traffic laws in the overarching interest of public safety and orderly mobility.
