Jigawa State Commissioner for Special Duties, Auwalu Danladi Sankara

A Kano Upper Shari’a Court on Monday dismissed the adultery charge filed against Auwal Danladi Sankara, the Commissioner for Special Duties in Jigawa State.

Sankara, the son of Senator Danladi Sankara, who served in the last Senate, was accused of enticing a married woman, Tasleem Baba Nabegu, after both were allegedly caught by the Hisbah board in an uncompleted building.

Sharia Khadi Ibrahim Sarki Yola, who struck out the charge against Sankara, cited a lack of convincing evidence to prove the commissioner’s guilt.

The presiding judge, who ruled in favor of Sankara, stated that the decision to dismiss the case followed the outcome of investigations conducted by the police command office of AIG Zone 1 Kano and the Kano State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice.

The court noted that reports provided by the two entities after their separate investigations found no evidence to support the allegations of an illicit affair between Sankara and Nabegu.

He added that the police report, as well as the Kano State Attorney General’s submission, revealed that the allegations against the duo were neither substantiated nor proven.

The court, therefore, cautioned the Hisbah officials and other law enforcement agencies to be professional while discharging their constitutional mandate and to avoid actions that may defame public characters.

Judge Yola further stated that there was no need for him to hear a response from the complainant since his decision to terminate the case was based on the reports of the AIG’s investigation and the Kano AG’s submission tendered before the court.

Although the complainant did not appear before the Shari’a Court, he had earlier alleged undue interference from the Kano and Jigawa state governments in the matter.

He sought justice for the alleged act of adultery committed against his legal wife.

Recall that the Hisbah board had declared Sankara wanted after he ignored a reconciliation meeting with Nabegu’s husband.

Commander General of Hisbah, Sheikh Ibrahim Daurawa, disclosed that Sankara had confessed in writing to committing the illicit act.
