About ten people, including children, lost their lives in a fatal accident involving a cement-laden truck in Nnewi, Anambra State.
The Guardian learnt that the crash occurred late on Friday along the Ugwu-Akpati Ozu axis of the Nnewi–Okigwe Road, near the Nnewi Area Command Bus Stop.
Eyewitnesses attributed the tragedy to a brake failure that caused the truck driver to lose control, ramming into a residential building and crushing residents, including children from the same family.
The driver of the truck also reportedly died in the crash, which left a trail of destruction, including damaged cars, motorcycles, shops, and buildings.
“The incident happened late on Friday when most people were at home. The loud noise from the crash alerted residents and passersby to the scene, creating a chaotic atmosphere as people tried to rescue those trapped,” a source said.
Confirming the incident yesterday, spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra, Margaret Onabe, assured the public that further details would be provided.
