The Yobe State Police Command has arrested two suspects for allegedly vandalising an electric transformer and cables in Yusufari Local Council of the state.
Police spokesperson, SP Abdulkarim Dungus, disclosed this yesterday in Damaturu, stating that the suspects dismantled a transformer and carted away electric components and cables measuring about 50 metres.
“The Yusufari Divisional Police headquarters has apprehended two suspects, Kabiru Ibrahim, 23, of Sabon Gari Gashua, and Abubakar Abubakar, 24, of Bade Local Council, for dismantling an electric transformer in Yusufari township. This led to plunging the council headquarters into darkness, including damages in the Sunomari general area of Yusufari town, a border community with Niger Republic,” Dungus said.
He added that the suspects were arrested based on credible information provided by residents who had been enjoying uninterrupted electricity supply. Both men reportedly confessed to dismantling the transformer and stealing over 40 metres of electric cables.
The arrest sparked outrage among youths in Yusufari, who condemned the repeated vandalisation of electricity facilities.
The police said some angry youths attempted to lynch the suspects and set ablaze the motorcycle allegedly used for the crime before security operatives intervened.
Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Ado, condemned the act and appealed to the community to remain calm and allow due process to take its course. “We’ll ensure that justice is served through due process by reporting suspicious activities to the nearest police station or security outpost,” he said.
