As reactions continue to trail the recent death of young medical doctor Vwaere Diaso, in a faulty elevator in Lagos, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has said that the death could have been avoided but for the poor condition of most work places in the country.

Chairman of the Chapter, Dr. Charles Ugwuanyi, noted that relevant authorities and government at different levels should take the safety of the work environment very seriously to avoid such unnecessary loss of life and manpower.

He made this known at a Thanksgiving mass to kick-start a weeklong activity marking the association’s Annual General meeting (AGM) yesterday in Abuja

He said, “We want to send a message out there that we are indeed not happy with the poor working conditions, which on this occasion have resulted in the death of this youngster with a very bright future ahead, and we are calling on the relevant authorities, government at different levels that manage different hospitals to take the safety of the work environment very seriously.

“Most of us were dressed in black; we are dressed in black today because we are in solidarity with our brothers and sisters the Nigerian Medical Association, Lagos State.
We are all in a very mourning mood, and while we pray for the repose of her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, we want to send a message out there that we are indeed not happy with the poor working condition, which on this occasion has resulted in the death of this youngster with a very bright future ahead, and we are calling on the relevant authorities government at different levels of government that manage different hospitals to take the safety of the work environment very seriously.”

Also speaking, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, (LOC) of the AGM, Dr. Ayogu Emeka, who said the church service is also a prayer for the repose of the soul, Dr. Diaso. “We are here to pray for the soul of our sister. We officially sympathize with the NMA on this issue.”

He listed other events for the week to include, the AGM proper, medical outreach, and dinner, among others.
