The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has inspected the ongoing construction of the Kano Northern Bypass and called on the Federal Government to expedite work on the project to facilitate easier movement for students and other commuters in the region.

The NANS delegation, led by its President, Babatunde Afeez Akinteye, visited the project as part of the association’s nationwide tour to inspect and assess federal road projects linking tertiary institutions across the country.

Akinteye said the association was particularly interested in road projects that affect students’ welfare and access to their campuses, stressing that NANS was also committed to monitoring infrastructure projects as part of its responsibilities as a stakeholder in national development.

According to him, the Kano Northern Bypass is expected to ease traffic congestion in the heart of Kano and improve access to institutions across the northwestern region when completed.

He said the project connects 10 institutions in the region and would reduce the transportation difficulties experienced by students and other road users traveling between Kano and neighbouring states.

Akinteye lauded the Federal Government and the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, for initiating the project, while urging the authorities to sustain the pace of work and ensure its timely completion.

The NANS president said the project comprised a 69.4-kilometre dual carriageway, three flyovers and seven bridges.

He said the quality of construction and pace of work observed during the inspection were encouraging, adding that the completion of the bypass would improve connectivity and reduce pressure on major routes within Kano.

Akinteye also commended the government for compensating farmers whose agricultural land was acquired for the project.

He said the compensation was important in mitigating the impact of the project on affected communities and protecting the interests of residents whose livelihoods depended on the acquired land.

He urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts to complete the project as soon as possible, saying its timely delivery would benefit students, commuters and host communities across the region.

NANS said it would continue its nationwide inspection of federal road projects leading to tertiary institutions and provide feedback on the road.
