Police rescue 16 abducted foreigners in Ogun

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), yesterday, issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the Ogun State Government to intensify efforts to rescue the five kidnapped students of Gateway Polytechnic, Sapaade, and address the growing insecurity affecting students in tertiary institutions.

The students, who commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for engaging the Federal Government to secure additional security support for the rescue of the abducted students, warned that if the students were not released within three days, it would embark on a statewide protest.

It said that its 72-hour ultimatum, which commenced yesterday, August 5, 2026, was not only for the safe return of the five abducted GAPOSA students, but the immediate arrest and prosecution of those behind both the kidnapping and the deadly attack at D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic.

The NANS also expressed grievances over the killing of Ahmad Sekinat, a female student of D.S Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori, during a robbery attack, lamenting that many students living in and off campus now live in fear of possible armed robbery attacks.

Secretary of NANS, Oladimeji Uthman, who disclosed this at a media briefing held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Abeokuta, urged the governor to address the challenges of insecurity faced by the students.

HOWEVER, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has rescued 16 foreign nationals abducted and held captive in a hideout at Onipanu-Ota, Ogun State.

The rescue was part of intelligence-led operations conducted by police operatives across seven states between August 3 and 4, 2026.

According to the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the operation also led to the arrest of a suspected fraudster and an abductor allegedly linked to victims in Ogun, Oyo and Osun states.

He said that the police recovered a Malian international passport during the operation and that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the principal suspect.
According to him, the case is being investigated by the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran.

Also in Enugu State, joint security operatives rescued two kidnap victims unhurt after engaging suspected kidnappers in a gun battle.

The operatives recovered 15 rounds of live AK-47 ammunition, mobile phones, cash and other exhibits from the suspects’ hideout.

Similarly in Plateau State, police arrested two suspected kidnappers and recovered an AK-47 rifle and 30 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition.

The suspects were allegedly linked to a kidnapping incident, while efforts continued to apprehend other fleeing members of the gang.
