Former Secretary-General of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Anthony Sani, has said that endorsement of direct primaries by political parties in the country will deepen their internal democracy.

Former Secretary-General of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Anthony Sani, has said that endorsement of direct primaries by political parties in the country will deepen their internal democracy.

The Northern elder, also, urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to consider the use of the electronic voting during the 2023 general election in order to deepen Nigeria’s democracy.

Sani stated yesterday: “My take on the harmonised version of the Electoral Act stems from the freedom given to INEC to determine where and when to use electronic voting without resort to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). That is how it should be for independence of INEC and credibility of the elections.

“That INEC has the right to use electronic and manual transmissions, as the case may be, has removed the fear that voters in 50 per cent of the polling units not covered by the Internet would not be short-changed.”

Lamenting the tampering with INEC results during the 2019 general election, Sani said: “What is left is for INEC to put up mechanism that will reduce hacking, considering that even developed countries are still battling with challenges posed by hacking of electoral processes.”
