NSCDC, KAS collaborate on conflict resolution
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has partnered with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) on inter-agency collaboration, coordination, and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) for NSCDC personnel in Lagos.
The partnership culminated in a two-day workshop for NSCDC officials in Lagos. Declaring the workshop open, the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Dr Ahmed Abubakar Audi, represented by the Lagos State Commandant, Mr Adedotun Keshinro, emphasised the importance of enhancing the skills of NSCDC personnel.
This, he said, is to promote partnerships, boost relationships with other security agencies, and improve citizens’ confidence in them. According to him, the workshop offers an opportunity for professional growth by introducing the participants to new concepts and best practices.
He said: “We’re going to look at emotional intelligence this morning, which is the cornerstone of effective leadership and collaboration. It involves the ability to recognise, understand, and manage one’s emotions, as well as the emotions of others.
“Conflict, as we know, is an inevitable part of any organisation, but it can also be an opportunity for growth and improvement.
“As leaders, our task is to model ethical conduct, enforce standards consistently, and create a culture where ethical behaviour is recognised and rewarded.
“This builds public trust, but also enhances the credibility of the organisation, as well as ultimately helps the NSCDC to fulfill its mandate. In conclusion, enhancing inter-agency collaboration and coordination, along with mastering ADR techniques, is vital for the effective management of security and civil defence in Nigeria.
“By developing emotional intelligence, improving communication, analysing conflicts, and embracing the full ADR spectrum, you can lead your teams with confidence and integrity.
“Now, let us commit to continuous learning and professional development, ensuring that everyone is well equipped to navigate the complexities of the roles he has, and to contribute to a safer, more secure Nigeria.”
On her part, the Resident Representative of KAS in Nigeria, Ms. Marija Peran, reiterated the long-standing partnership between KAS and the NSCDC, spanning over 20 years.
She expressed appreciation for the Commandant General’s support towards ensuring the smooth training and retraining of NSCDC personnel across the country.
Peran noted that the workshop will equip participants with skills in effective communication, empathy, open dialogue, emotional intelligence, and other required skills to achieve better outcomes when interacting with other security agencies.
The workshop features renowned facilitators, including Professor Tajudeen Akanni, Professor of Security Studies at the University of Ibadan, and Ambassador Segun Ogunyanwo, an accredited mediator.
The NSCDC and KAS collaboration aims to promote inter-agency collaboration, conflict resolution, and effective communication among security agencies, ultimately enhancing national security and citizens’ confidence in the corps.
