The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has trained 135 officers in its Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on basic arms and weapons handling and how to effectively engage in combat operations.
FCT commandant, Dr. Olusola Odumosu, who spoke at the Passing Out Parade (POP), of the officers on Tuesday in Abuja, said that the training would help the Command fulfil the Corps’ mandate of ensuring that the protection of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI), from acts of vandalism.
“This is a worthy step taken to curb the challenges of vandalism and other vices hampering the peace and development of the Federal Territory.
“In discharge of your duties, always remember the rules of engagement, be professional in handling your riffles, protect yourself, protect your riffles, protect lives and property” he said.
Odumosu disclosed that from January till date, the Command has arrested over 120 persons suspected to have engaged in vandalising public facilities and theft, adding that out of these numerous cases, the corps has secured court convictions while some are still ongoing.
He pointed out that the new trainees better position the Command to surpass the current achievements of the Corps in the fight against vandalism and the protection of lives and property.
While appreciating efforts of the FCT minister Barrister Nyesom Wike, for his constant unalloyed support to the NSCDC FCT Command, the Commandant said “His empowerment of the command through the provision of operational vehicles, motorcycles and other operational gadgets has been an immense boost to our capability”.
The minister who was represented by the Director of security Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Adamu Gwary, expressed confidence in the gallantry exhibited by the armed trained personnel adding that the trained personnel will be a boost to the security architecture in the FCT.
