The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 General election in Nigeria, Peter Obi, has congratulated Dr. Peter O. Nwosu on becoming the 11th and first Black President of the State University of New York (SUNY) at Oswego, United States.

The Nigerian-born Nwosu was officially inaugurated into this distinguished position on September 27th, marking the first time an African-born individual and an immigrant will lead the 163-year-old institution.

Writing on his X handle, Obi said his accomplishments are a strong reminder, not only to individuals but also to leaders of the Nigerian society, of the critical need to invest in education if we are to lift our nation out of its current challenges and onto a path of development.

“As I have always said, education remains the most valuable investment any nation can make in its citizens,” Obi said.

“Once again, I congratulate Dr. Nwosu and pray that God grants him the wisdom and strength to succeed in this new role, while continuing to contribute to the development of our nation, particularly in the education sector.”

Obi indicated that Nwosu’s appointment is not only groundbreaking for SUNY Oswego but also serves as an inspiration for African and immigrant communities around the world.

“He has long been an advocate for education, dedicating his career to empowering youth and promoting education as a pathway to success. His leadership reflects a deep commitment to advancing the role of education in societal development,” Obi said.

Obi praised Nwosu’s achievement, noting that it highlights the importance of investing in education to foster national and global progress.

“His accomplishment stands as a reminder to Nigerian leaders of the need to prioritise education to drive the nation’s development.”
