Okorie returns to APGA 10 years after

Okorie
Ten years after he dumped the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to form the deregistered United Progressives Party (UPP), founding National Chairman of the party, Chief Chekwas Okorie, yesterday, returned to APGA.

At a well attended event in Enugu, Okorie, who, after the deregistration of UPP by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2020, said he had also resigned his membership of the APC and reregistered as an APGA member in his ward at Alayi, Bende, Abia State.

He stated that his decision to return to APGA followed days of consultations after the APGA National Working Committee (NWC) led by Chief Edozie Njoku visited him last month and apologised for the injustice meted on him in the party.

Okorie said APGA had remained the only truly progressive party in Nigeria. He noted: “Nigeria has come to a point where the social contract of political parties with the people needs to be interrogated.”

Recalling his experiences in APGA, Okorie said: “We struggled for eight years to save the soul of the party, but the INEC did a lot of summersaults on APGA matters.

“When we left to form UPP in 2012, it was with a heavy heart, but we had no choice.

“In 2020, we decided to try our hand with the ruling party, APC, though it was a difficult decision.

“At the end of the day, we were not comfortable in APC; there was pressure from everywhere that we should return to APGA.

“When the Supreme Court affirmed Chief Edozie Njoju as the authentic chairman of APGA, his first port of call was here, and the appeal was strong.

“The apology was accepted and I have consulted and my associates said it’s a good step to take.”
