Non-Academic staff unions and inter-university centres may begin an indefinite strike in the new year if the federal government fails to distribute the N8 billion it recently released to the university system.

The unions are Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Associated Institutions (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

In a resolution at the end of its emergency meeting in Abuja, the Universities and Inter-universities Centres Trade Group of NASU said though it appreciated the release of the fund, its inequitable distribution might precipitate another round of industrial action.

The resolution, signed by NASU’s deputy president/chairman of council, Godfrey Ugwu, and senior deputy general secretary, Festus Ajayi, urged the federal government to ensure that the centres that did not benefit from the recently released N23 billion benefit this time around.

It said: “Council-in-session also resolved that if, by the end of December 2018, the issue of disbursement of the earned allowances is not positively resolved, the union would have no other option than to, in the new year, commence actions to get the government do the needful on the subject-matter.

“The council-in-session also called on the relevant agencies of government to observe the principles of equity and fairness in the sharing of the N8 billion to universities and inter-university centres, and to consider the centres that did not benefit from the recently released N23 billion.” NASU called on the concerned agencies of government to expedite action on the disbursement of the money before the end of 2018.The union pledged support for the on-going strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
