Nigerian Breweries (NB) Plc has handed over a new model block of six furnished classrooms, with a library and toilet to the Government Day Secondary School, Karu, Abuja, in honour of the 2018 Maltina Teacher of the Year, Olasunkanmi Opeifa, who is from the school.

The Maltina Teacher of the Year is an initiative of the Nigerian Breweries/Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund organised to reward outstanding teachers. Opeifa, an English Language teacher, had in October 2018 defeated his counterparts in both public and private secondary schools across the 36 states of the federation to clinch the highly coveted prize. For his efforts, Opeifa was awarded N1 million in addition to N500, 000 he received as state champion from Abuja. He is also receiving N1 million yearly for the next five years while a block of six classrooms was promised to the school.

Speaking at the inauguration, Managing Director NB PLC, Jordi Borrut Bel, said the project was part of the company’s corporate vision to improve education in Nigeria and a fulfillment of the promise made to Opeifa. Bel, represented by the Head of Government Relations NB Plc, Vivian Ikem, said the initiative was conceived to celebrate and reward teachers having realised that teachers hardly get the recognition they deserve in spite of the pivotal role they play in determining the quality of education in the country.

Ikem disclosed that the initiative has so far produced four winners, several state champions and runners-up. Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, appreciated the firm for its continuous efforts in improving the educational sector by investing in infrastructure, and encouraging teachers and students and called on other corporate organisations and well placed individuals to emulate Nigerian Breweries by partnering with the Federal government to improve the sector.
