NIHOTOUR to appeal Lagos court ruling on hospitality training

National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR)

The National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR) has said it would challenge the judgment of the Federal High Court in Lagos in a suit instituted against it and other defenders by the Hotel Owners and Managers Association of Lagos (HOMAL).

NIHOTOUR, in a statement yesterday by its Director-General, Abisoye Fagade, said it would obtain the certified true copy of the judgment and consult its legal advisers on the appropriate appellate process.

The institute reaffirmed its commitment to defending its statutory mandate and promoting professional standards in Nigeria’s hospitality, travel and tourism sectors.

Fagade maintained that the legal dispute extended beyond an institutional disagreement, arguing that the issues involved were critical to professional development, workforce competence and Nigeria’s competitiveness as a hospitality and tourism destination.

According to him, the country could not build a globally competitive hospitality industry without investing in the skills and competence of its workforce.

He said: “Professional training, recognised qualifications and continuous development are not obstacles to business. They are investments in employees, enterprises, consumer confidence and the long-term reputation of our destinations.

“NIHOTOUR recognises the legitimate interests of hotel owners and operators, as well as the importance of protecting jobs, encouraging investment and maintaining a viable business environment.

“These objectives should not be treated as incompatible with professional development and appropriate standards.”

NIHOTOUR also called for differences over regulatory authority to be resolved through the law and constructive engagement among relevant federal and state institutions.

The institute maintained that the industry needed a clear and workable regulatory framework that would promote professional development, respect lawful jurisdiction and support sustainable growth.

The institute explained that its reform agenda was centred on building a skilled workforce, helping businesses secure competent personnel, assuring investors of reliable service standards and improving visitors’ experiences in Nigeria.
