The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has installed water buoys along the inland waterways from Gbajibo in Niger State to Gbajibo-Mundi in Kwara State to improve navigational safety.

The Assistant General Manager of Corporate Affairs, Suleiman Makama, in a statement o Tuesday, said a total of 16 buoys, which comprise 10 red and six green, have been strategically placed to guide water users.

He said this will ensure safer navigation across the river, which has a minimum depth of 21.3 meters.

According to NIWA, these buoys serve as critical markers, helping boat operators and other water users identify safe channels, avoid hazardous areas, and recognize designated protected zones.
Makama said this initiative aligns with NIWA’s broader efforts to enhance safety across Nigeria’s inland waterways.

He said during the 2025 Management Retreat, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of NIWA, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, stressed the importance of strict safety regulations and improving operational efficiency.

NIWA reiterated its commitment to proactive safety measures that will not only safeguard lives and goods but also enhance economic activities along Nigeria’s extensive inland waterways.

For continued safety and efficiency, the authority urges waterway users to adhere to navigational guidelines and utilise the markers for safe passage.
