The Organisation of African Instituted Churches (OAIC), Nigerian Region, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Pope Francis, extending its condolences to the global Catholic community and the Catholic Church in Nigeria.
Pope Francis, the 88-year-old Argentine pontiff, reportedly passed away on Monday, 21 April, prompting a wave of tributes from religious leaders across the world.
In a statement signed by the Regional President of the OAIC, His Most Eminence, Elder Israel Akinadewo, the organisation conveyed its heartfelt sympathies to the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria and all Catholic faithful in the country.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the leadership of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria and the entire Catholic faithful in Nigeria,” Akinadewo said.
He commended the late pontiff’s unwavering commitment to peace, unity, and the welfare of humanity, describing Pope Francis as a figure whose influence transcended religious boundaries.
“We recall Pope Francis’ selfless dedication to promoting peace, unity and the well-being of humanity. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire us to work towards a more just and compassionate society,” the statement added.
The OAIC also offered prayers for the eternal repose of the Pope’s soul and for strength and comfort to the global Catholic Church as it mourns the passing of its spiritual leader.
