Ofeimun tells Nigerians to emulate Olaopa’s patriotism

Renowned poet and prolific writer, Odia Ofeimun, has urged Nigerians to emulate the patriotism of a retired federal permanent secretary, Prof. Tunji Olaopa, for the country to be great again. Ofeimun, who was private secretary to the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, made the call in Ibadan yesterday at Olaopa 60th birthday celebration.

He recalled the early 1990s when the country was still great in the comity of nation.“Nigeria was best known then as a great country, simply because of the kind of people we had then. We had vibrant and sound minds devoid of any corruption.

“We can still be a great country again, but we need people like Prof. Tunji Olaopa, who are ready to go extra miles in bringing good things to the country.“If there are many people like Prof. Ola Opa at the helm of affairs in Nigeria, we can still take over the rest Africa,” he said.

The poet, however, said that the current situation in the country could be linked to the lack of men of impeccable character that could help move the country forward at the pace we want.

“Nowadays, average Nigerians don’t think of what they can offer the immediate environment. During our youth, we all believed in building our society first, then the society will in turn build us, and that is really what happened to most of us.

“Then our society was so supportive. Then I knew that I would be a writer, and then started working towards achieving that dream,” Ofeimun said.
