Offa professors seek equity in appointments to Kwara schools

Professors from Offa in Kwara State, under the platform of Offa Professors Forum (OPF), have appealed to the state government to be fair in appointing people to institutions and establishments.

The dons, who made the appeal at the inaugural meeting of the forum, charged the state government to take deliberate steps to redress the lopsided nature of its appointments.

They cited the appointment of principal officers in government establishments in the state, particularly the tertiary institutions.

Prof. Bayo Lawal and Prof. Sam Niyi Ojo, co-chaired the meeting, which disclosed that Offa currently has no fewer than 100 professors across the nation and abroad.

In their separate presentations, Lawal, the convener, Prof. Hussein Bukoye Oloyede and former Vice-Chancellor of Fountain University, Osogbo, Prof. Bashir Raji, highlighted the significant role of Offa to human capital development, especially in the area of western education.

The forum said Offa had placed a lot of premium on education, as far back as 20th century, hence the Church Missionary Society establishment St Mark’s (Anglican) Primary School in the place in 1909.

The academics also noted the establishment of Offa Grammar School, by the Offa Descendant Union, which was the first community-owned secondary school in the then Northern Nigeria in 1943.

The forum appointed the Vice Chancellor, Summit University, Offa, Prof. Hussein Bukoye Oloyede, Prof. Musibau Akanji, immediate past VC of Federal University of Technology, Minna, immediate past VC Fountain University, Osogbo, former Dean Social Sciences, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Prof Raufu Dunmoye, and Prof. Taibat Mojo Bakare-Odunola as protem executives.

OPF congratulated the beacon of academic endeavour in Offa, Prof. MO Oyawoye, for attaining the age of 91 years and launching his autobiography.

It also congratulated the Olofa of Offa, Oba Mufutau Gbadamosi Oloyede, Esuwoye II, the Offa Descendant Union and all sons and daughters of Offa, for building a N700 million Mobile Police Barrack for the Nigerian Police.
