Ogun State Government has filed criminal charges against two traditional rulers and other persons over alleged land grabbing across the state.
In a statement by the state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwasina Ogungbade (SAN), the state, in its charges of forceful takeover of land and forcible entry of land contrary to law against Onijoko of Ijoko Ota, Oba Fatai Matanmi, said facts uncovered in the investigation revealed that Oba Matanmi sold a parcel of land in 1976 to one Madam Irokosu, now late.
It said that following Irokosu’s demise, Oba Matanmi began to harass the complainant, claiming that the late Madam Irokosu owed him a balance.
Similarly, the state filed charges of securing entry into land by violence against Oba Yusuf Olasunkanmi, the Olu of Orile-Igbon, a town in Igbesa area of Ogun State.
Oba Olasunkanmi was accused of using intermediaries, as well as unlawfully appropriating land belonging to the complainant and many other persons.
The state government said that Oba Olasunkanmi, while using the cover of a judgment obtained against third parties, commissioned the attachment of land and enforcement of the judgment in areas more than one kilometre away from the judgment land.
Oba Olasunkanmi, who would be arraigned tomorrow, September 25, 2025, was accused of chasing away the legitimate occupants of the land.
Further, the state has also filed charges against Chief Lekan Agbogun and Chief Akinbowale Beckley, who sold a complainant’s property in the Mosafejo area of Abeokuta without authority.
The accused persons were alleged to have connived and sold a third party’s property to a buyer overseas, notwithstanding that they had no title claim or documents to the land, and despite the presence of the complainant’s existing building on the land.
