Oke assumes office as Nigeria’s envoy to France, vows to reset bilateral ties

Ambassador Ayodele Oke has assumed office as Nigeria’s 17th Ambassador to the French Republic, following the presentation of his Letters of Credence to French President Emmanuel Macron.

Oke presented his credentials to Macron on October 5, 2026, at the historic Élysée Palace in Paris, formally commencing his diplomatic assignment in France.

The ceremony, held at the French presidential palace, comes with a stated commitment by the new envoy to strengthen and recalibrate the partnership between Nigeria and France.

Oke said his mission would focus on deepening bilateral cooperation in key areas, including security, trade and investment, while advancing Nigeria’s national interests and protecting the welfare of its citizens.

According to him, resetting the relationship would require Nigeria to play a more active role in shaping bilateral conversations, securing strategic advantages and promoting the country’s national image.

The ambassador also stressed the importance of upholding Nigeria’s values and reputation with clarity and credibility in the course of his diplomatic engagement with the French government and other stakeholders.

Ambassador Ayodele Oke’s assumption of office comes as Nigeria and France maintain longstanding diplomatic, economic and security relations, with both countries engaging on issues of mutual interest.

The envoy said his assignment would seek to further strengthen the relationship on the basis of mutual interests, while ensuring that Nigeria’s voice and national priorities remain clearly represented.

He concluded his message following the credential ceremony with a prayer for the country: “May God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
