The Senator representing Imo East Senatorial District and Labour Party senatorial candidate for 2023 polls, Ezenwa Onyewuchi, has denied allegation of attempting to hijack the party’s leadership in Imo State for personal interest.

The Senator representing Imo East Senatorial District and Labour Party senatorial candidate for 2023 polls, Ezenwa Onyewuchi, has denied allegation of attempting to hijack the party’s leadership in Imo State for personal interest.

The Association of Labour Party Local Council Chairmen and Association of Labour Party Pioneer Members in the state had, during separate meetings held in Owerri on Monday, accused Onyewuchi of attempting to impose non-members to displace duly elected executives of the party in the state. The groups had called on the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as well as its national leadership to intervene over the matter in the interest of peace and justice in the party.

But Onyewuchi, who spoke through his media aide, Chinedu Opara, described the allegations as “unfounded, lies and handiwork of detractors.”

Opara insisted, contrary to the allegation, that Onyewuchi has remained consistent and committed to efforts, which will guarantee continued growth and progress of the party in Imo.

He said: “Aside Onyewuchi’s obvious contributions to the party, and also being the highest elected office holder in Imo LP, the decision to make him the apex leader of the party was reached by constituted authorities, backed by constitutional provisions of the party.

“Onyewuchi is not power-drunk. He has not, at any time, interfered in the leadership of the party in the state. In fact, since he joined the party from PDP, his only interest has been on how to strengthen the party for victory in 2023 polls.”
