The Osun Development Association (ODA) has called on political parties, candidates, their supporters and other stakeholders to conduct themselves with restraint, civility and respect for the democratic process as campaigns intensify ahead of the August governorship election in the state.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Dr. Segun Aina, OFR, the association said elections should remain a contest of ideas, vision and programmes aimed at advancing Osun State, rather than an avenue for violence, intimidation, hate speech or actions capable of undermining public peace.
According to Aina, Osun has built a reputation as one of Nigeria’s most politically conscious and enlightened states, with a history of peaceful democratic participation that must be preserved.
“Osun has earned a reputation as one of Nigeria’s most politically conscious and enlightened states. Our people have consistently demonstrated maturity in exercising their democratic rights. We must not allow this proud tradition to be eroded by unnecessary tension, inflammatory rhetoric or acts of provocation,” he said.
The ODA urged all governorship candidates to focus their campaigns on issues affecting the lives of the people, including economic development, education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, youth employment, security and good governance.
It warned against personal attacks, misinformation, character assassination and divisive narratives, saying such practices have no place in a democratic society.
The association also appealed to political supporters to remember that elections are temporary, while the bonds of friendship, family and community endure beyond any political contest.
“No political ambition is worth the loss of human life or the destruction of property,” the statement said.
The association further called on political parties to educate their members on peaceful conduct throughout the campaign period, while urging traditional rulers, religious leaders, community leaders and civil society organisations to continue promoting dialogue, tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
It also urged security agencies to remain professional, impartial and vigilant in protecting lives, property and the integrity of the electoral process.
The ODA called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a transparent, credible, free and fair election by maintaining neutrality and upholding the highest standards of professionalism.
It equally appealed to the media and social media users to verify information before publication and refrain from spreading fake news or content capable of inciting violence.
According to the association, the future of Osun State depends not only on who wins the election but also on how the electoral process is conducted.
“The ODA remains committed to supporting every effort that promotes peace, democratic governance and sustainable development in Osun State. We encourage all eligible citizens to participate peacefully in the electoral process and make their choices freely, responsibly and without fear.
“Let us demonstrate once again that Osun State is a beacon of democratic maturity, political tolerance and peaceful coexistence. Together, we can preserve the peace, protect our democracy and secure a brighter future for generations to come,” the statement added.
As part of efforts to deepen democratic values and promote peaceful participation, the association announced plans to convene a summit of political stakeholders across the state in July 2026 ahead of the governorship election.
