A human rights group, Hope For The Common Man in Iwo, Osun State, has picked holes in the handling of a case of a 68-year-old woman, Mrs Ayetimiyi Ibironke, who was attacked by a gang of suspected thugs at Ori-Eru junction in Iwo on September 6, 2026.

The Executive Director of the group, Nurudeen Ibraheem, a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo, argued that the Divisional Police Officer of Adeeke Police Division, Sunday Fayofunmi Osungbure, failed to act when the children of Ibironke, who was being allegedly brutalised by some thugs allegedly led by one Saheed Ajani, popularly known as “Executive”, stormed thr Ori-Eru junction where the woman was selling fish.

Contrary to a statement earlier issued by the Police Public Relations Officer in Osun, Abiodun Ojelabi, claiming that Mrs Ibironke was supporting a faction of Okada riders at the junction, Ibraheem explained that “the victim, Mrs. Ibironke Ayetimiyi, is not a member of, or affiliated with, any faction of Okada riders. She is simply a petty fish seller carrying out her lawful business in the area.”

He expressed worry that the PPRO’s press statement was devoid of thr allegation that Adeeke Police Station DPO ignored pleas by the victim’s children to rescue their mother, wondering why the Police arrested the woman’s two children and accused them to attacking Saheed Ajani while allegedly brutalising their mother.

Ibraheem, while rendering account of the alleged attack, had mentioned that the alleged attack was led by one Saheed Ajani, alongside other suspected hoodlums identified as Taiye Agbede, Isa, also known as “Iroko”, Eje and Ileogbo.

The victim’s children also alleged that they rushed to the Adeeke Police Station, Iwo, to seek intervention after the attack began, but claimed that the Divisional Police Officer, Sunday Fayofunmi Osungbure, failed to act.

One of the victim’s children said: “The DPO told us he cannot do anything, that the issue is beyond him. Despite our cries and plea that the police should intervene, we were ignored.

“Saheed Ajani and his boys eventually beat our mother until she fainted before they left her. They succeeded in using blows to remove her teeth as she was soaked in blood.”

The family alleged that Ajani remained free after the incident and had allegedly used the same police station to harass them through what they described as trumped-up allegations.

“Instead of arresting Saheed Ajani, the police are now arresting us, claiming we retaliated when Ajani was attacking our mother,” one of the children alleged.

Ibraheem had said he intervened in the matter, narrating how Ibironke was allegedly beaten unconscious after she refused to allow some people to take bottles from her shop.

According to Ibraheem, the incident was linked to a clash between two groups of commercial motorcycle operators, popularly known as okada riders.

He said some persons allegedly stormed Ibironke’s shop to collect bottles for use during the clash.

The two groups were reportedly led by Ajani and one Muri from Osogbo, with the dispute allegedly connected to control of commercial motorcycle operations in Iwo.

Ibraheem said Ibironke’s refusal to allow Ajani’s associates to take bottles from her shop allegedly angered the group, which then attacked her.

Days after, the PPRO issued a statement, noting that the human rights activist’s narrations did not portray “the true fact of the case.”

“…a case of assault occasioning harm was reported at Iwo division by one Ayetimiyi Oluwakemi ‘f’ against one Ajani Saheed and later referred to SCID for discreet investigation.

Investigation revealed that there are two factions of Okada riders at Iri-Eru junction, Iwo and one faction is supported by one Ajani Saheed ‘m’, who owns a hotel at the same junction while the other faction is supported by one Ibironke Arowolo who owns a beer parlor at the same junction.

Meanwhile the two factions of the Okada riders have been having issues of customers for a long time and have always been settled by the okada riders’ chairman. On 06/09/2026, the issue resurfaced and during the course of resolving the conflict between the okada riders by Ajani Saheed ‘m’, a fight ensued between Ajani Saheed and Samuel Ayetimiyi and Ajani was injured on the head by Samuel Ayetimiyi ‘m’, a biological son of Ibironke Arowolo ‘f’ with a broken bottle. When the supporters of Ajani Saheed saw that he has been injured, one Sodiq Yusuf ‘m’ and Olagoke Kolawole ‘m’ and other at large invaded Ibironke Arowolo shop, assaulted her, inflicted injuries on her face and other part of her body and subsequently she was admitted in a hospital.

Consequently, Doris Ayetimiyi also a biological daughter of Ibironke Arowolo having seen that her mother was being beaten up in a pool of blood, she conspired with some of her mother’s customers who were in the shop at that moment and engaged themselves in the fight with Saheed Ajani along with the customers who are presently at large.

In view of this, five suspects who took part in the Assault Occasioning Harm, Conduct Likely and Affray were arrested namely:
