Rehabilitation of Olaiya flyover unnecessary, don tells Adeleke

The Imole Campaign Council (TICC), an organisation in charge of Governor Ademola Adeleke‘s re-election bid, and the Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), yesterday, disagreed over the reported gun attack that rocked motor parks in Osogbo.

However, while the TICC alleged that the APC was sponsoring violence and plotting to destabilise the state, the opposition party described the suspension of NURTW activities by the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) as a timely measure to avoid bloodshed.

MEANWHILE, against the backdrop of Adeleke’s recent order for the rehabilitation of Olaiya Flyover, a retired professor of Sociology, Lai Olurode, yesterday, said the planned repair on the facility was unnecessary and capable of raising political tension in Osun State.

In a statement by its Spokesperson, Pelumi Olajengbesi, the TICC alleged that the invasion of motor parks by the APC-backed thugs aptly reflected the party’s desperation to scare voters ahead of the August 15 polls, having lost public support.

TICC further likened the development to the local council crisis of February 2025, which it said, culminated in loss of lives, warning that violence under any guise should not be allowed to destabilise the peace of Osun State.

But countering the position of the TICC, the APC, in a statement by its Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, accused the Accord Party-led administration of Governor Adeleke of sacrificing its responsibility of maintaining peace and guaranteeing the safety of the people in the state for political consideration.

The party lauded the state chapter of ALGON over its suspension of transport union activities in all the motor parks in the state to checkmate the protracted violent activities in the state.

Olurode, while reacting to the development in a statement forwarded to The Guardian, described Olaiya Flyover as one of the legacy projects by the immediate past Governor Gboyega Oyetola of the APC, saying that Adeleke’s order for the flyover repair was unnecessary and could trigger political tension.

The don noted that with less than four weeks to the off-season governorship election in Osun, there’s no doubt that the pre-election crisis has heightened apprehension and trepidation in the state.
