The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested a cleric, Asonye Isaiah, over allegations of abuse involving a 16-year-old girl in the Karshi axis of Karu Local Government Area.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Ramhan Nansel, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, April 19, 2026, outlining the circumstances that led to the suspect’s arrest.

According to the police, the suspect allegedly exploited the trust of the victim’s family by claiming the teenager was under spiritual affliction and required urgent cleansing at a river.

Acting on this claim, the girl’s aunt reportedly handed her over to him in good faith.

Rather than carrying out any form of spiritual intervention, the suspect was said to have taken the minor to a hotel in New Karshi, where the alleged abuse occurred.

Authorities further stated that the victim was threatened and warned against disclosing the incident.

The situation reportedly came to light after the victim’s guardian observed noticeable changes in her behaviour and raised concerns, which eventually led to a formal complaint with the police.

Following the report, operatives attached to the Karshi Divisional Headquarters apprehended the suspect.

Police added that the victim was promptly taken for medical evaluation, which supported claims of abuse and informed the ongoing investigation.

During preliminary interrogation, the suspect reportedly admitted to the allegations and sought leniency, according to the statement.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, has ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Lafia for a more detailed investigation and possible prosecution.

The police command reiterated its commitment to protecting vulnerable members of the public and urged residents to promptly report suspicious activities or cases of abuse to law enforcement authorities.
