• Sheriff Blames Failed Peace Deal On Makarfi

The National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned what it called an open declaration of war by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement issued by its spokesman, Dayo Adeyeye, the PDP said the call for war confirmed earlier fears that the APC-led Federal Government had come to spread violence and dictatorship in the country.

Also yesterday, the party’s faction led by its former acting national chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, blamed the committee for the failure of the peace move in the party.

Adeyeye said: “The open declaration of war on the people of Rivers State is only reaffirming our earlier position and fear that all the actions and ‘body language’ of the APC since it took over power in May, 2015 is gearing towards erasing democracy and installing full blown dictatorship in Nigeria.

“This is very sad and a complete reversal of all the democratic experience we have built and nurtured in Nigeria in the last 16 years.

“A political rally, which normally should have been an opportunity to sell its programme and manifesto, was instead turned into a call for war and violence by the APC leaders.”

Adeyeye said the PDP would not fold its arms and allow the APC and its supporters destroy our hard earned democracy. We will not stop, but continue to alert Nigerians and the international community to the danger the ruling party is posing to our democracy.”

While inaugurating factional executives for the Rivers and Plateau states in Abuja yesterday, the factional Deputy National Chairman, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, who spoke on Sheriff’s behalf, said Makarfi dumped the peace initiative because he believes he would win the case at the apex court.

Sheriff denied allegations that his faction is out to kill the party, saying his interest is to kill impunity in the opposition party.
