Chairman of Kaduna chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Felix Hassan Hyet and rights activist, Senator Shehu Sani have called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare the party’s candidate, Isa Ashiru, as winner of last weekend’s governorship in the state.
Hyet made the appeal yesterday during a press conference in the capital.
“I hereby call on INEC to declare Isa Ashiru of PDP as winner of the election, using the authentic results,” he demanded.
Also speaking, Sani lamented the delay by the electoral umpire to announce winner of the contest.
He charged INEC to be just and fair, adding that a state like Kano, with 44 councils, had announcement results, whereas Kaduna, with23 councils, was still foot-dragging.
“We are concerned about the delay. Is it that INEC’s postponement is a tactic by the state government to impose a dusk to dawn curfew to deny the people of their rights,” he queried.
IN a similar vein, an observer mission, International Police Chaplain Sustainable Development and Law Enforcement Incorporated USA has advised aggrieved candidates and parties to maintain peace and seek redress in court.
Addressing a press conference, yesterday, Head of Mission, Nigerian Election and Director of African Affairs, Colonel Johannes Makuonia, pointed out that as a key player in social cohesion, especially during the election period, civil society should pool resources for maximum monitoring of the entire process.
He said: “It should pursue civic education and citizen sensitisation to strengthen inclusive participation in these major republican events.
“We suggest that the Federal Government should take necessary measures to ensure greater mobilisation throughout the electoral process.”
Makuonia urged Nigerians to embrace tolerance and togetherness in the post-lection period for peace to reign across the federation.
