The Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) has sought full implementation of the 1992 Nigerian Urban and Regional Law, which it said, holds the key to sustainable settlements in the country.

The professionals urged the federal and state governments to religiously implement the law to enhance the livability of the cities and halt haphazard developments.

NITP’s National President, Dr Chime Ogbonna, made the appeal during the 75th anniversary of World Town Planning Day held at the weekend. The World Town Planning Day was first celebrated in 1949 and stands out as a day set aside to celebrate how good planning improves people’s and society’s lives, creating sustainable places for people to live, work, recreate, and engage in productive activities.

This year’s theme, which was ‘Homes Start with Planning’, underscored the importance of housing for all. He highlighted that there was no good housing without urban and regional planning.

urging Nigerians to unite for the full implementation of the novel indigenous town planning law as a panacea for equity in the ecological system and sustainable development of Nigerian cities and towns.

Ogbonna expressed concerns that ‘housing for all’ has been a huge challenge for cities and towns with varying degrees, noting that by 2030, the United Nations estimates that three billion people, about 40 per cent of the world’s population, would need access to adequate housing.
