Police authorities in Kano State have confirmed the attack on the campaign office of the representative of Kano North Senatorial District, Senator Barau Jibril and arrested no fewer than 13 suspects in connection with the act.

Scores of suspected political thugs, who were armed with dangerous weapons, reportedly set ablaze Barau’s governorship campaign office on Maiduguri Road in the early hours of yesterday.

The Guardian learnt that although no life was lost during the attack, the thugs vandalised the building and left with several valuable items.

A team of armed security officers was sighted in a checkpoint along with the Farm Centre near the senator’s residence to forestall further attacks and possible security breaches.

Barau, who is Chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriation and loyalist of Senator Ibrahim Shekarau’s faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as well as a founding member of G-7 APC group in Kano, has been at loggerheads with Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Abdullahi Abbas-led faction of APC.

It is widely believed that the recent court declaration that recognised the Barau-led ward congress against Governor Ganduje’s congress might have triggered the development.

Besides, Barau’s gubernatorial ambition clashed with candidates believed to have Ganduje’s support.

Reacting to the development, one of Barau’s aides, Shittu Madaki Kunchi, accused the Abdullahi Abbas-led group of being responsible for the attack on the facility.

Shittu, who spoke with The Guardian on the development, accused some members of APC loyal to Abbas of leading the attack on Barau’s office.

He assured that Barau would remain patient to enable the police to conduct a proper investigation into the matter and urged party supporters to remain calm and law-abiding.

A statement issued by a Police spokesman in Kano, DSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed that some thugs were arrested with dangerous weapons shortly after the incident.

“On December 2, 2021, at 08:00hrs, we received a report that thugs carrying dangerous weapons were sighted attacking and vandalising Senator Barau’s office on Maiduguri Road in Kano.

“On receiving the report, the Kano State Commissioner of Police (CP) Sama’ila Shu’aibu Dikko, directed Operation Puff Adder teams to move to the scene, restore normalcy and arrest the culprits. The teams immediately swung into action and arrested 13 suspected thugs,” the statement reads.
