
Operatives of the Rivers State Police Command have apprehended two suspects caught vandalising and attempting to steal street solar lights installed by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in Port Harcourt.
The arrest was made on January 26, at about 3:00 a.m., following credible information received by the police, according to a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko.
The suspects, identified as 30-year-old Shaibu Yusuf from Bolari Town in Gombe Local Council of Gombe State and 28-year-old Ibrahim Abubakar from Katsina Local Council of Katsina State, were caught in the act along Danjuma Drive, off Trans-Amadi Road.
Iringe-Koko disclosed that both suspects reside at the Okuru scrap dumpsite in Abuloma Community, Port Harcourt. Items recovered from them include solar light poles, panels, bolts, nuts, and a knife.
The suspects reportedly confessed to being part of a syndicate responsible for vandalising and stealing solar street lights and manhole covers in the area. The police spokesperson added that efforts are underway to apprehend other syndicate members, while the suspects will be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
