No fewer than eight persons have been reportedly injured in a stampede as armed hoodlums, suspected to be kidnappers, whisked away the immediate past lawmaker representing Akwa Ibom South, Senator Nelson Effiong, at a popular joint, known as the Red Chamber.

The Guardian gathered that Effiong was seized by three ‘bandits’ at his lounge, a popular sit-out along Oron Road, Uyo, the state capital late Sunday night.

Eight of the customers, it was learnt, were injured in a stampede as they scampered to safety amid gunshots by the kidnappers.

“I have just been shot along Oron Road,” Erick Ekwere, one of the victims cried out on social media, urging security agencies to come to their rescue.

“The incident occurred about 9:00 pm on Sunday night. The armed men stormed the sit-out with a Toyota Camry car and started shooting at random, sending the customers and other guests to scamper to safety before they made straight for the former lawmaker,” a source said.

Effiong, the source added, was later whisked away by the kidnappers in a Toyota Camry car to an unknown destination.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Odiko Macdon, confirming the incident, said: “The Command has received that report about the abduction of the victim and the Commissioner of Police has ordered an investigation into the matter. I believe that in no distance time, he would be rescued.

“The CP condemned the act and said no resources would be spared to ensure that he is rescued and situations like that are not tolerated. Steps have been taken and are on the way to ensure that the situation is brought under control.”
