Police in Lagos caution hoodlums, pledge to uphold justice
As Sanwo-Olu restates commitment to security
The new Commissioner of Police (CP) in Lagos, Adegoke Fayoade, yesterday, committed to principles of justice, proactive and responsible policing in the state. Fayoade stated this at Command Headquarters, Ikeja, during a handing over ceremony and engagement with police formations.
The CP promised that members of the public would be enlightened about risks and precautionary measures they can take to protect themselves from robbery, kidnapping and other crimes.
On his plan to boost security in the state, Fayoade said a Special Police Neighbourhood Squad will be established for prompt response to incidents. He noted that public awareness programmes would be put in place to help individuals understand the consequences of criminal behaviour, and empower them to make choices.
Efforts will also be made to re-orientate the public on the importance of swift reportage of crime and criminal activities, even as the command promised to collaborate with the media. He said: “I would like to unequivocally pledge my absolute dedication, commitment and resolve to the principles of justice and community safety in Lagos.
“This will be achieved through practical, proactive policing, community engagement, strict and effective law enforcement strategies. I am determined to create a peaceful and crime-free environment in which all residents of Lagos can flourish.”
Fayoade added: “There is no gainsaying that community policing is the cornerstone of a safer society. I am wholeheartedly committed to operationalising community policing from a concept into an indispensable operational tool.
“Criminality is not an inherent natural phenomenon but rather a manifestation of societal dynamics. Our commitment to crime prevention and reduction serves as our guiding light, which will lead us towards a safer and egalitarian society. Our strategy for addressing crime in Lagos State will therefore encompass a multifaceted approach.”
IN a related development, Lagos State government has restated commitment to protecting the life and property of all residents. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu gave the assurance during the commissioning of a police station at the Idimu area of the state.
Facilities at the police station include a lecture hall, hostel, canteen and commandant’s quarters. The governor said the project is not only remarkable but also attests to the commitment of the state towards ensuring the safety of life and property.
Represented by Secretary to the State Government, Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, the governor said the infrastructure is a testament of the administration’s faith in the police. He noted that a suitable environment will further enhance the performance of the commandant and his officers.
“As a government, all hands have been on deck to ensure that Lagos State is free of crime, filthy environment, and several other social vices.
“We are leaving no community behind on this journey of a better security architecture that is required in a smart city,” he said. He added that the government is considering the use of technology to make Lagos greater, safer and more secure.
Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, appreciated the government for its commitment to enhancing infrastructural development in justice administration and supporting the cause of law and order in the state.
On his part, Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who was represented by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Dotun Odubona, lauded the state government and the Ministry of Justice for constructing and delivering the ‘Area M Command’ to the police. He pledged that the facilities would be properly maintained.
