Police in Nasarawa arrest suspect for defrauding job seekers
The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested a 33-year-old suspect, Yusuf Idris, for impersonating the state Commissioner of Police, Shehu Nadada Umar, and defrauding job seekers under false pretences.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Ranham Nansel, disclosed this yesterday. He said the suspect, who hails from Obi Local Council and resides at Ombi I, Lafia, was apprehended after defrauding unsuspecting victims of their money while promising them employment opportunities.
According to Nansel, Idris used the commissioner’s name to convince job seekers that he could secure positions for them in the Nigeria Police Force and the Nasarawa State Hospital Management Board.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Idris fraudulently collected N300,000 from one Monday Akinde in Obi, promising to secure him a job at the Hospital Management Board.
The suspect also deceived the victim into believing he could sell a slot allegedly allocated by the police commissioner for recruitment into the Nigeria Police Force for N500,000.
To reinforce his claims, Idris lured Akinde to the state police command headquarters in Lafia and left him at the entrance before entering the premises, where he was arrested.
“A search conducted on the suspect led to the recovery of N300,000 in cash and two fake promotion letters from Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital, which he admitted to obtaining on Facebook,” the statement said.
Commissioner of Police Nadada Umar urged members of the public who may have been defrauded by the suspect to report their complaints to the police. He also warned the public to be cautious of employment scams and avoid sharing sensitive personal information on social media.
