Police nab young man for defiling 11-year-old in Ogun

Operatives of Ogun State Police Command have arrested a 20-year-old man, Lawal Hammed, for defiling an 11-year-old girl at Odogbolu area of the state.

The Guardian gathered that Hammed of 5 ABA Quarters wilfully and unlawfully had carnal knowledge of the teenager inside his bathroom at Agbowa Road, Aiyepe, in Ijebu.

The father of the girl further narrated that the suspect has been harassing his daughter sexually for a long time.

Spokesperson for Ogun State Police Command, Superintendent of Police (SP), Omolola Odutola, in a statement, yesterday, confirmed that the case was reported at Odogbolu Division in Ogun State.

Odutola said the victim has been taken to Odogbolu General Hospital, for medical examination, emotional therapy and counselling.

According to her, the law of defilement in Nigeria is trite, Section 218 of the Criminal Code Act.

Odutola said the incident happened less than a week after four defilement cases were reported, and the spike of it made the state’s Commissioner of Police (CP), Alamutu Abiodun, to send messages to parents to embrace authoritative and supporting style of parenting skills, which at the long run will build obedience, discipline, and confidence in their children.

She said: “The section states that ‘any person who has unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 13 years is guilty of a felony and is liable to imprisonment for life’. This is for the determination of the court.

“As soon as the investigation is concluded, the suspect, who is deemed to know the law by virtue of being above 18 years, will be charged to court on the strength of material evidence from forensic examination.”

MEANWHILE, the Command is on the trail of a security guard, Godwin Idorenjin, who absconded from his duty post after stealing electrical cable worth N5 million.

The security guard was employed to secure an American returnee, Orisunmibare Owoyemi, ‘m’ of 1, Orisunmibare Street, Greenland Community Development Association (CDA) Sabo, Abeokuta, to secure his house.

Owoyemi had complained of house-breaking and stealing to Divisional Police Office (DPO), Ilupeju Division, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Opawoye Mustapha, that on August 8, when he visited his house under construction at 1, Orisunmibare Street, Sabo Abeokuta, and found out to his dismay, that the security guard employed to secure the house was nowhere to be found.

Owoyemi said he discovered his electrical cables as well as the battery of the car parked inside the compound were vandalised and stolen by unknown persons.

According to him, the estimated value of the stolen items is worth above N5 million.

Confirming the incident, Odutola said the U.S.-based returnee has pointed suspecting fingers to his fleeing security guard, who at the time he visited his uncompleted building, in a slightly remote location, had abandoned his duty post without a trace.

“Ogun State Police Command is calling for volunteer anonymous information that will aid the police in apprehending the fleeing suspect.

“For persons who have buildings in remote places, the Commissioner of Police is advising that you report to the nearest Divisional Police Headquarters where such construction is taking place, so workers, security guards can be properly profiled by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), who will further advise on how best to prevent such occurrences by putting the DPO on notice.

“CP Abiodun has been briefed and he has deployed trackers to beam searchlights on the fleeing felon. There is no cause for alarm as Idorenjin will definitely be apprehended,” Odutola added.
