Police officer kills man in Akwa Ibom

A police officer, attached to the Eket division in Akwa Ibom State, Awana Jacob, has allegedly shot one Emmanuel Dickson to death, at a burial ceremony.

A police officer, attached to the Eket division in Akwa Ibom State, Awana Jacob, has allegedly shot one Emmanuel Dickson to death, at a burial ceremony.
 
It was gathered that the officer shot the victim on the head and fled the scene, but resurfaced to confess that he had an accidental discharge.
   
The deceased, a resident of Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, was shot dead, while trying to scale over a fence to evade gunshots as a result of the invasion of the burial ceremony by a team of shooting police officers.
 


An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, said the incident occurred on Sunday, October 10 about 5:05p.m., in the residence of the deceased’s father along Edoho Ukpong street, Idua village.
   
The chairman of Ukwa Village council, Elder Samuel Etukudoh, who confirmed the incident, yesterday, called for justice over the death of the deceased, who happened to be his brother-in-law.
   
He said the incident occurred when an uninvited police team barged into the premises, causing the mourners to run to various directions for safety.
   
According to him, the deceased was shot by one of the officers, while trying to scale over a fence for escape.
 
He said:  “It was about 8:00a.m. when my wife called to notify me of the incident. My wife is the sister to the deceased. I was informed that my brother-in-law was shot by the Police,

The police barged into the compound. On sighting the police, they started running and this boy in question attempted to scale the fence when a police bullet got him dead. But he is trying to tell us that it is an accidental discharge.
 
Also, the deceased elder sister, Princess Nelly Dickson, expressed shock over the untimely demise of her younger brother, adding that she was yet to see her brother’s corpse.
 
When contacted,  the Police Public Relations Officer for Akwa Ibom State command, Odiko Macdon, said the information he had about the incident was still sketchy, adding that he could not  comment further until he was fully briefed about the incident.
