A statement by the command’s spokesman, Mr. Abimbola Oyeyemi, in Abeokuta indicated that the gang members had blocked the Sagamu-Benin expressway with intent to rob passengers in a luxurious bus belonging to the Young Shall Grow motors.

“While the operation was going on, a distress call was made to the police at Ogbere divisional headquarters, consequence upon which the DPO, John Okon, led his anti-robbery men to the scene where they engaged the bandits in a gun-duel, which lasted for about 30 minutes,” Oyeyemi said.

“At the end of the encounter, one of the suspects was shot dead while others escaped into the nearby bush. Recovered from the deceased robber are a locally-made long barrel gun, a toy pistol and charms,” Oyeyemi disclosed.

According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu “has ordered a manhunt for the rest of the suspects with the view to bringing them to justice”, assuring that security of members of the public is guaranteed at all time.
