A pregnant woman has survived the building collapse that occurred in the Idi-Araba, Mushin area of Lagos on Sunday, May 18, 2025.
One person was feared dead, while three others were rescued from the one-storey building still under construction, located at Ishaga Road, opposite the Idi-Araba Central Mosque, Idi-Araba, Mushin, Lagos.
The South West Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye, said that emergency responders rushed to the scene and rescued victims who were trapped under the rubble. The victims were taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Late in the night, the body of the deceased was pulled out.
Though the cause of the building collapse remains unknown, the remains of the deceased have been transferred to the morgue.
When The Guardian visited the area, it was learnt that a pregnant woman who was sleeping in a building on the right-hand side of the collapsed structure, simply identified as Mrs. Isiaka, survived. Meanwhile, a young man identified as Qudus remains in critical condition.
The Guardian learnt that the family of Qudus was told to pay N1.5 million for his operation.
“We don’t know if he will survive because he was left with a bad injury, and his family was told to bring N1.5 million.
“We doubted when the name of the deceased was mentioned because he had just run an errand for an Alfa, who asked him to fetch water for ablution. We don’t know when he returned there.
“Lucky for us, there were fewer people on the site than usual. This could have been worse if it had been raining, because people would have gathered under the building for cover,” he said.
